“‘Ah, well, people can be a bit stupid abou’ their pets,’ said Hagrid wisely. Behind him, Buckbeak spat a few ferret bones onto Hagrid’s pillow.'”

‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’

Hagrid’s love for strange (and especially dangerous!) creatures is not a secret, but the fact that his first name is a nod to an alchemical colour might be less well known!

In one of the latest exclusive entries by J.K. Rowling released on Pottermore.com a few weeks ago, we learnt that colour played its part in the naming of Hagrid. Find out more in the ‘Colours’ entry, which you can unlock in the Moment ‘The Campsite’.

Happy birthday Hagrid!

They made their way slowly down the lawn, making a shallow trench in the glittering, powdery snow, their socks and the hems of their cloaks soaked and freezing. The Forbidden Forest looked as though it had been enchanted, each tree smattered with silver, and Hagrid’s cabin looked like an iced cake.

‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’

Winter has arrived on the Pottermore.com Homepage and the snowfall has brought some visual changes to the Map, such as a Christmas tree in Hogsmeade and a snowman in London. Harry had to stay at Hogwarts for most Christmases. However, we imagine that a hundred fat turkeys, mountains of roast potatoes and the flaming Christmas puddings definitely make Hogwarts a great place to be at Christmas! But if it were down to you, would you rather stay at Hogwarts or go home for Christmas? Vote in the poll below!

The Pottermore team would like to wish you all a very merry festive holiday and a happy new year.

Those of you who aren’t spending Christmas at Hogwarts this festive season might be relieved to know that you should be able to eat your puddings without fear of breaking your teeth on a silver Sickle. Likewise, crackers ought not to explode with several live mice, although regrettably this is not something the Pottermore team can guarantee!

Why not visit the Great Hall and your common room on Pottermore.com to wish a happy holiday season to your fellow Pottermore.com members? Today might also be a great time to visit the Moment ‘Christmas at Hogwarts’ and share it with your friends!

The Pottermore team would like to wish our Pottermore community a superb 2014. Whether that means mastering potions, winning more duels, or any other aspirations you may have, we hope you fulfil all of your new year resolutions over the coming year.

‘I don't expect you will really understand the beauty of the softly simmering cauldron with its shimmering fumes, the delicate power of liquids that creep through human veins, bewitching the mind, ensnaring the senses … I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory, even stopper death – if you aren’t as big a bunch of dunderheads as I usually have to teach.’

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Today is Severus Snape’s birthday! He’d probably be a difficult person to buy for, but we’d bet 10 Galleons that he would not enjoy an incorrectly brewed potion! Can you remember the first Hogwarts student to incorrectly brew a potion in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire? Give your answer in the poll below.

Celebrate Severus Snape’s birthday with us today!

Tom Hodgson, Pottermore’s Creative Director, shared a time-lapse video during his presentation to an audience of Harry Potter fans at A Celebration of Harry Potter, Universal Orlando Resort.

The time-lapse video, specifically created for this event, shows how a Moment gets from the drawing board to the final splashes of colour. The Moment in question is ‘Snape’s Dark Mark’ (from Chapter 36 of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) which will be released in the final instalment of the book on Pottermore.com.

Now that the artwork stage of this Moment is complete, the Moment moves across to our animation, sound, design and development teams to apply the finishing touches.

We hope you enjoy this video.

(When playing the video switch on your volume to hear the audio clip from the story that relates to this Moment – courtesy of the Pottermore Shop.)

Is this how you imagined a Moment being made? Tell us on Facebook if you have an account, or on Twitter with the Hashtag #HPCelebration. If you enjoyed this video, you might also enjoy reading about the ins and outs of how this particular Moment was created. Tom explained to the audience:

“...As you can see, this is the Moment where Snape reveals his Dark Mark to the still disbelieving Fudge.  The audio you heard was Jim Dale’s reading of the Goblet of Fire, which is available as a digital audio book at the Pottermore Shop.  You can also listen to the digital audio books at the Pottermore booth throughout this weekend, so do pop by.

I’m going to use this Moment to demonstrate our thought process when blocking out the scene and the positioning of the characters: As we have shown the Hospital Wing several times before - Harry always seems to end up there! - we concentrated on choosing an interesting angle that we have not seen before.  We knew how we wanted the room to look – its dimensions, the windows, the bed, the flagstone floor, so the challenge was how to present and position the many characters in the scene.  We spent a lot of time blocking it out – establishing where the different characters might be that made sense in terms of the scene, but also to conceal faces.  Whilst we’re on the subject of concealing faces, I want to explain why we do this in all Moments on Pottermore.com.  We try to provide the most faithful companion to the reading experience possible, and one of the most important aspects of reading is your own imagination. It is not for us to tell you what Sirius Black looks like in detail, or contradict the vision you have of him in your head. Instead, we encourage our Pottermore.com users to celebrate their own versions of the characters and we enjoy looking at some of the fantastic pieces of artwork our users upload every week to show just what they see.  Please keep them coming.

Back to blocking the Moment: we painted two options for Bill - one on the bed and one on the edge of the scene.  After some debate, we decided that the bed wasn’t the way to go as the bedside was getting very crowded with Bill, Sirius and Harry all jostling for space.  We moved Madam Pomfrey because she was obscuring Bill’s ponytail and once Harry’s positioning was correct we could place Padfoot in a protective pose.”

You’ll soon be able to listen to brand-new audio clips by J.K. Rowling about Gilderoy Lockhart on Pottermore.com.

If you’ve been following Pottermore’s coverage of A Celebration of Harry Potter, you might have read that three exclusive audio clips by J.K. Rowling about Gilderoy Lockhart were unveiled at the event.

In these audio clips, J.K. Rowling discusses this flamboyant character’s family background, his failed business idea and where the Sorting Hat nearly put him during his time at Hogwarts. The audio reveals her mischievous sense of humour as she pokes fun at the excesses of celebrity, with echoes of today’s celebrity endorsement culture.

Pottermore.com users who couldn’t attend the event might be pleased to hear that these audio clips will make their way to Pottermore.com in just a few days’ time, so keep an eye on your Pottermore Owl Notifications and check the Pottermore Insider regularly to find out when they’re available. If you can't wait for the audio clips to appear on Pottermore.com, you can head over to EW.com andtheguardian.com where you'll find early access to these clips!

In the meantime, we’re giving you the opportunity to revisit the moment from the digital audio book Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets where we meet Professor Lockhart for the first time, and learn that he’ll be taking up the post of Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts.

Note: Anyone in the world is able to listen to these audio snippets, however publishing restrictions may determine whether you are able to purchase the US or the UK version of the English language books.

Seeing tens of thousands of Harry Potter fans gathered in Orlando today, one can imagine Gilderoy Lockhart might be upset to learn that they are not attending a surprise party thrown in his honour, but A Celebration of Harry Potter.

However, we thought he’d be pleased to discover that we didn’t forget his birthday completely: the exclusive audio clips by J.K. Rowling that were revealed by Pottermore at the event yesterday are all about Lockhart, which is a birthday gift suitable even for Lockhart’s vanity. These audio clips will make their way to Pottermore.com in the next few days, so keep an eye on your Pottermore Owl Notifications.

Harry Potter fans who attended the event didn’t forget Lockhart’s birthday either, and we even had a few of them send their birthday wishes wearing smiles that could rival Lockhart himself.

We’d love you to celebrate Lockhart’s birthday too by submitting a drawing on Pottermore.com of a Lockhart smile worthy of Witch Weekly’s Most-Charming-Smile Award. And don’t forget to add your very own birthday wish to the drawing!
