A new eBook, The Tales of Beedle the Bard, is now available from the Pottermore Shop

In the world of Harry Potter, The Tales of Beedle the Bard is a well-known and well-loved collection of short stories that are read to young witches and wizards.

Now, you can make it part of your Harry Potter eBook collection, as The Tales of Beedle the Bard is available to download from the Pottermore Shop.

Discover such tales as ‘The Warlock’s Hairy Heart’, ‘The Fountain of Fair Fortune’, and famously, ‘The Tale of the Three Brothers’. There are also additional notes and summaries from Professor Albus Dumbledore – musing on the teachings within the tales – for you to enjoy.

The Pottermore Shop is the only place in the world where you can buy all seven Harry Potter eBooks, digital audio books and the companion eBooks, Quidditch Through the Ages by Kennilworthy Whisp, Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them by Newt Scamander and, now, The Tales of Beedle the Bard.

Congratulations Gryffindor on winning the Pottermore House Cup!

It’s been a spirited competition, with much brewing and duelling but we would like to congratulate Gryffindor as the victor of the Pottermore House Cup for November, 2012.

Commiserations to Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw, but your chance to make the Pottermore House Cup yours will come again - the house points have already been reset for the next contest in the Great Hall.

As a reward for winning the Pottermore House Cup, Gryffindor will be able to download beautiful artwork of their common room as wallpapers and screensavers for their electronic devices.

Members of Gryffindor house, keep an eye out on your owl notifications for further details when these become available, they should be arriving soon.

Until the next Pottermore House Cup, we wish everyone good luck and keep up the great work on your potions and spells.

Fair Play on Pottermore

The Pottermore House Cup is a hugely popular part of Pottermore.com and maintaining the integrity of the competition is important so that it continues to be enjoyed by all.

Many of our Pottermore members have raised concerns about user accounts that seem to be using unfair methods to quickly score large numbers of Pottermore house points.

With the start of the next Pottermore House Cup this week we are stepping up our efforts to ensure the fairness of the Pottermore House Cup for all. We have measures in place to prevent or detect unusual house point scoring, and will deduct house points where strong evidence of unfair play is found.

For example, we've addressed cases with questionable activity, such as a user account that seemingly completed 1,560 duels in less than 6 hours, a spell cast every 14 seconds without pause, winning every one! Another user account had won two duels a minute for 24 hours without rest, house points were also deducted from that account.

We have invited anyone who has had house points deducted, but can show that the points were actually earned fairly, to contact the Pottermore team and their points may be re-instated. For those that do contact us, we will ensure that we review your cases with great care and restore fairly earned points, and will use that information to further improve our measures to detect true foul play.

In the meantime, we hope that everyone continues to enjoy the spirited competition on Pottermore.com, making it a fun and enjoyable experience for all.

The Hogwarts Library Books– Quidditch Through the Ages, Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them and The Tales of Beedle the Bard– are available for the first time as eBooks in French, Italian, German and Spanish, and there’s only one place you can find them – the Pottermore Shop.


Quidditch Through the Ages by Kennilworthy Whisp, is the ideal text to reach for when brushing up on your Quidditch knowledge and know-how.

Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them by Newt Scamander - a duplicate of Harry Potter’s own copy - is dotted with his and his friends’ useful comments about the unusual creatures found in the wizarding world.

The Tales of Beedle the Bard is a collection of renowned wizarding stories, notably including ‘The Tale of the Three Brothers’. The book also includes reflective notes penned by Professor Albus Dumbledore.

Further information on fair play on Pottermore.com

We use various methods to limit the opportunities to unfairly earn house points on Pottermore.com, the most visible of which is reCAPTCHA. However, we do limit these visible measures as some can disrupt the experience for users on older browsers and slower connections.

Recently we introduced a number of new behind the scenes measures to further limit the effectiveness of scripting and other unfair ways of earning house points. These additional measures instead look at the patterns of house point scoring, and can highlight unusual activity that may indicate automated rather than human point scoring. Every case of unusual behavior that is detected is reviewed by a member of the Pottermore Team and a decision taken on whether or not to deduct points.

Those who have points deducted receive an email from the Pottermore Team informing them that unusual activity was detected on their account. If you have received this email but feel that the point deduction was unwarranted, we encourage you to respond to the email. A member of the Pottermore Team will then review the case and if the information you provide, along with the usage information we collected, suggests the points may have been scored fairly, points will be reinstated.

We would like to thank those affected users who have already responded to the email. Your thoughts and feedback will help improve our monitoring as we continue our efforts to maintain the integrity of the Pottermore.com House Cup so that it remains a fun and fair competition for all.

Creatures: The Basilisk

‘Its methods of killing are most wondrous, for aside from its deadly and venomous fangs, the Basilisk has a murderous stare, and all who are fixed with the beam of its eye shall suffer instant death.’

- Chapter Sixteen, The Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

It is Hermione who first learns the truth of the ‘horror within’ the Chamber of Secrets, helping to solve the puzzle of the strange voice Harry hears in his second year at Hogwarts and the horrific attacks on students that have been occurring.

We encounter the fearsome Basilisk at the end of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, where Harry comes face to face with this monstrous beast within the underground Chamber.

Controlled by means of Parseltongue – snake language – the poisonous Basilisk proves a frightening and deadly enemy for Harry.

Recently you’ve been sharing your tea leaf predictions with us and now that the leaves have settled we can confirm; changes are coming soon to Pottermore.com.

The teacups show the shapes of three different creatures – a Hippogriff, a large dog and a rat. Each creature represents a different Moment from the first chapters of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, coming very soon to Pottermore.com.
